Plot summary
Sally Nash and Joe Therrian mark their sixth wedding anniversary shortly after a separation they have tried to put behind them. Joe is a novelist preparing to direct the screen version of his latest bestseller. Sally is an actress he declines to cast in the lead, a part drawn partly from her, because he considers her too old for it. The couple is also in an ongoing dispute with their neighbors, the clean-and-sober writer Ryan and the interior decorator Monica Rose, over the barking of the Therrians' dog Otis, and the Roses are invited in an attempt to ease it. Among the other guests are Gina Taylor, a photographer whose relationship with Joe predates the marriage, and Skye Davidson, the up-and-coming actress Joe has chosen for the part Sally believes is hers.
