Plot summary
The 2003-04 Broadway season brings four new musicals, followed from pre-production through opening night, publicity and reviews to the Tony Awards. Wicked is seen as the most commercial prospect, a large-scale show from an established composer with established Broadway leads, drawn from The Wizard of Oz, seen from the witches' side in their youth. Taboo comes from a London run with a high-profile backer and composer, though its names are untested on Broadway. The smaller Avenue Q and Caroline, or Change face the steepest climbs: one courts an audience that rarely buys Broadway tickets, the other carries a reputation for a depressing story. Three of the four open in the fall, ahead of the spring window when Tony voters are watching.
