Plot summary
A mysterious Lecturer gathers the parents of a small middle-American town in 1936 and presents a film called Tell Your Children as a warning about marijuana and the young. In it, Jimmy Harper and Mary Lane are a joyful teenage couple, unaware of what goes on at The Reefer Den across town. Mae lives in the Den with her boyfriend Jack, a street tough who deals dope to her and to the others who gather there, among them the college dropout Ralph and the prostitute Sally. Jack turns up at Miss Poppy's Five and Dime to corrupt more young people and offers Jimmy swing lessons to impress Mary. At the Den, Jack, Mae, Ralph and Sally urge Jimmy to smoke his first joint, and a hallucination follows.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The musical was born on a drive from Oakland to Los Angeles, when Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney were listening to Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage and Studney turned to Murphy and suggested doing Reefer Madness as a musical. They had written the first song before reaching Los Angeles.
- The high school in the film carries a pointed joke: it is named after Harry J. Anslinger, the first Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Narcotics and the man known as the Father of the Drug War.
- The song "Mary Jane/Mary Lane" was written specially for the screen version and won the 2005 Emmy Award for Music and Lyrics; it was afterwards folded back into later stage productions of Reefer Madness.
