Plot summary
In 1973, Billie Jean King is the top-ranked player in women's tennis. When promoter Jack Kramer refuses to raise the women's prize money, she and her manager Gladys Heldman organize their own tour, and the players who sign on are banned from U.S. Lawn Tennis Association events. Married to Larry King, Billie Jean grows close to her hairdresser, Marilyn Barnett, while on tour in San Diego. Bobby Riggs, a former champion who gambles and whose wife Priscilla disapproves, proposes a $100,000 challenge match against the best woman player, pitching it as a chauvinist against a feminist. Billie Jean declines and hangs up.
