Plot summary
The town of Glipforg on Planet 51 resembles 1950s America, and its green residents live there in peace. Lem works at the local planetarium and hopes to win over his neighbor Neera, while his best friend Skiff has a job at a comic book store. Then an astronaut from NASA, Captain Charles T. Baker, comes down in a spaceship, believing no one lives on the planet. Because the planet's media calls spacemen brain-eating monsters, the military commander General Grawl declares Baker an invader and sends his forces after him. Baker takes refuge in the planetarium, where Lem finds him, and Lem agrees to help the astronaut reach his ship before its command module leaves for Earth in three days. Keeping him hidden costs Lem his job and upsets Neera, who believes the visitor means no harm.
