Plot summary
Carmen and Juni Cortez have joined the OSS spy kid division, and Gary and Gerti Giggles, the children of agent Donnagon Giggles, are their competition. The two pairs race to rescue the President's daughter Alexandra at Dinky Winks's theme park, Troublemakers, and afterwards Carmen defends Gary, which strains her relationship with her brother. At the agency's awards banquet, Donnagon is named its new director in place of Gregorio Cortez. Magna Men storm the event for the Transmooker, a device that can disable every electronic device, and in the scuffle Gary makes Juni drop it, letting the attackers take it. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (2002)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- To fake a bigger budget, Robert Rodriguez re-used props and sets: the ship used by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino held only one captain's chair, so Gugino's image was flipped, and Rodriguez left her hair part unchanged on purpose so viewers would spot the trick.
- Lead animator Gregor Punchatz removed motion blur from the computer-generated creatures so they would look like Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion work; Harryhausen himself cameoed in the film and received a "special thanks" credit.
- Robert Rodriguez asked for the same $38 million budget as the first Spy Kids and, in exchange, demanded total creative freedom, which he used to chase an old-school Ray Harryhausen-style adventure.
- The whole film was shot on high-definition digital video, a decision Rodriguez made after watching George Lucas use the format on Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and testing it during re-shoots of the first Spy Kids.
