Plot summary
Highwaymen work the roads of England in 1748. Will Plunkett works them with his partner Rob, until a heist outside a debtor's prison goes wrong and Thief Taker General Chance kills Rob, who had swallowed a large ruby. Plunkett wants that stone back. James Macleane, an upper-class gentleman who has landed in debtor's prison, saw the incident and decides the same ruby is his route out of debt. Plunkett ambushes him and takes it, then swallows it himself as Chance's men close in. In Newgate Prison the pair strike a bargain: Plunkett's criminal knowledge and Macleane's social standing buy them freedom and a new trade, robbing the gentry as the Gentlemen Highwaymen, with Chance hunting them. Macleane's attention turns to Lady Rebecca Gibson, niece of the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Gibson.
