Plot summary
In London's contemporary art world, dealers, collectors, artists and wannabes circle one another over money. Art Spindle runs a high-end gallery and hopes to sell a Mondrian for millions. His assistant Beth sleeps with Bob Macclestone, his most acquisitive client, and wants Bob to fund a gallery for her, so the two of them arrange to buy the painting behind Art's back. Bob's wife Jean has her eye on Jo, a young conceptual artist, while Jo pursues Paige, Art's newest assistant. Elaine, a videographer who works through friends and lovers, may get a show from Beth if she sells out her agent Dewey.

- Dennis Hopper originally held the option to adapt Danny Moynihan's novel into a film set in New York City, and Rachel Weisz agreed to play the central gallerist role that Graham eventually took.
- Amanda Seyfried was cast as an "art-world nymphet" after Danny Moynihan discovered her, then unknown, living around the corner from him in Chelsea.
- Rachel Weisz's departure from the production prompted the producers to switch the film's location to London, a change made for cost reasons.
