Plot summary
Doctor Arthur Neuman leads a tour of an Edge City museum, telling visitors that the Mask of Loki gives its powers to whoever wears it. A stranger among the tourists transforms into Loki and takes the mask from its display case, finding only a replica. Meanwhile the real mask is pulled from a river by Otis, the dog of Tim Avery, an aspiring cartoonist who is unsure about becoming a parent. Tim wears it to a Halloween party at the animation studio where he works, where his boss Daniel Moss gets an idea for a cartoon. Tim's son Alvey is born with the mask's power, and Odin orders Loki to find the child, telling him the mask will follow.

- In a 1995 Barbara Walters Special, Carrey revealed that he was offered $10 million to star in The Mask II, and turned it down because his experiences on Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls convinced him that reprising a character he had previously played offered him no challenges as an actor.
- Jack Black, Chris Rock, Breckin Meyer, Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, Marlon Wayans, Seann William Scott, Steve Carell and Ryan Reynolds were all initially offered the role of Tim Avery and turned it down, Reynolds already being committed to Blade: Trinity.
- The film was deemed "not funny" and thirty-eight minutes were demanded to be cut, resulting in what Kennedy described as an "ADHD clusterfuck", with numerous VFX-based scenes added that focused on Alvey and Otis.
- The poor reception of Son of the Mask inspired Jamie Kennedy to co-create the 2007 documentary Heckler, an examination of hecklers and professional critics, and from 2021 he released in-depth videos on his YouTube channel about making the film.
- In June 2026 Russell was on board to direct another Mask sequel, saying "It's not ready yet, but that's a lovely idea"; a month later he died at his home in the San Diego Area at the age of 74, ending the idea for good.
- Ben Stein reprises his role as Dr. Arthur Neuman from the original film, and is the only actor to appear in both films as well as in The Mask cartoon series.
