Plot summary
Matt Ellman, a war reporter, travels to Singapore with Jessie, the woman he loves, meaning to ask her to marry him. A suicide bomber kills them both. They wake on Riverworld, a planet where every human who has ever died lives again in renewed health along the banks of a single endless river. Each newcomer wears a grail band that supplies food and drink, and those killed revive somewhere else along the river. Matt finds friends from his old life and meets figures out of history, among them the American author Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, and Tomoe Gozen, a Japanese warrior of the twelfth century. The explorer Richard Burton and the conquistador Francisco Pizarro are among the dead reborn in the same world.
