Plot summary
Two thousand years before Bernard Bottle's troubles, a sorcerer corners a man over a knife-throwing accident and shuts him inside a lamp as a genie. In London, Bernard works as an art dealer and closes a sale worth fifty million pounds. He tells his boss, Charles Pinkworth, that he promised half the money to the paintings' original owners, and Pinkworth fires him for it. Bernard goes home and finds his girlfriend Judy with his best friend Kevin Bell; she clears the flat, leaving little but an ornate antique lamp. Cleaning the lamp sets off an explosion that puts Bernard in the hospital. Back at the flat, a stranger attacks him, and Bernard's wish that the man speak English is granted. The stranger, Josephus, explains he has been a genie for two thousand years.
