Richard Martinez teaches as a substitute in New York City and performs stand-up comedy on the side. Through the Teaching Ambassador Program he wins a full-time general science job at Milford High School in Milford, Texas, a small town where the students set out to torment their teachers. Deborah Ward, who supervises him in the program, heads the school's conservative faction. Once the town discovers that Richard is gay, Principal Wayne fires him, a step Texas law permits.
