Plot summary
Ali leaves Iowa for Los Angeles hoping to dance professionally, and she auditions around the city without much luck. One night she comes across a burlesque club, the Burlesque Lounge, where the owner Tess, a former dancer, performs with her troupe. Jack, a songwriter who tends the bar, points her toward Tess, and while an audition does not work out then, Ali picks up a tray, starts serving, and is taken on to wait tables. The club is in financial trouble and the performers have problems of their own. Georgia, one of the leads, is expecting a child, so the Lounge holds auditions for her replacement, and Ali takes on a demanding routine until Tess agrees to hire her. The news angers Nikki.

- Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Biel auditioned for the role of Nikki, and Canadian actor Shawn Roberts, already cast in the Screen Gems production Resident Evil: Afterlife, was briefly considered for the role of Jack Miller.
- Steven Antin wrote the original screenplay and directed the film, but Diablo Cody, of Juno, revised it uncredited, and Susannah Grant revised it further, also without credit.
- With costs of $55 million, Burlesque was Screen Gems' most expensive film, with the exception of the studio's Resident Evil pictures.
- Burlesque gave Christina Aguilera her first leading role, and it was Cher's first musical performance on screen since Good Times in 1967.
- Burlesque grew into a camp favorite: Joey Nolfi of Entertainment Weekly wrote that it "inspired everything, from drag queen revues to viral internet moments", and in 2019 a full-length tour based on the movie played British venues, with Farrah Moan as Ali Rose and Chad Michaels as Tess Scali.
