Plot summary
Former pupils and teachers of Bearsden Academy, a school in a well-to-do Glasgow suburb, recall the fifth-year pupil who arrived in 1993 and the two years he spent among them. They describe a classmate who looks older than the rest, speaks in a deeper voice, and has an accent explained by time spent in Canada. A teacher understands a car crash left his skin looking older. He favors music of the 1980s, which his peers take for an interest in music history, and in class he shows knowledge he never tries to play down. Their recollections are mixed with cartoon recreations and archive footage, while the pupil himself answers questions without appearing on camera.

In 1995, 'Brandon Lee,' a fifth-year student at Bearsden Academy in Scotland, was discovered to have been Brian MacKinnon, a 32-year-old former student posing as a 16-year-old.- MacKinnon agreed to be interviewed for the film but did not want to appear on camera, so actor Alan Cumming appears as his avatar, lip syncing to the audio of MacKinnon's interviews.
