Plot summary
Dr. Bill Harford and Alice are married and live in Manhattan with their daughter Helena. At a Christmas party given by Victor Ziegler, Bill's patient, Bill runs into Nick Nightingale, a pianist he knew in medical school. Ziegler leaves them to help Mandy, a young woman who has overdosed, and Bill assists. The next night Alice tells Bill she has imagined being with a naval officer. Called to a patient's home, Bill refuses the proposition of Marion, the man's daughter. Walking the city, he meets a prostitute, Domino.

- Guinness World Records recognized Eyes Wide Shut as the longest constant movie shoot, running over 15 months with an unbroken stretch of 46 weeks. It kept Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman from starting Mission: Impossible 2 and Practical Magic.
- Kubrick shot scene after scene more than 70 times to wear his actors down into something authentic, and filmed Cruise walking through a door 95 times. Vinessa Shaw was hired for one scene and two weeks and stayed two months.
- Harvey Keitel had already filmed the role of Ziegler when he left, and Jennifer Jason Leigh followed him out. Keitel later said he quit feeling Kubrick had disrespected him, and Gary Oldman said the breaking point came when Kubrick asked for dozens of takes of him walking through a doorway.
- Kubrick's fear of flying kept this New York story in England. Greenwich Village was rebuilt at Pinewood Studios, Manhattan footage was rear projected behind Cruise, and production designers were sent to measure the width of the real streets and note where the newspaper vending machines stood.
- Kubrick showed the film to a Warner Bros. representative at his Childwickbury home on 5 March 1999 and died of a heart attack two days later. Editor Nigel Galt went back to finishing it on 13 March, the day after the funeral.
- The masked woman at the orgy does not speak with the voice of the actress on screen. Abigail Good could not manage a convincing American accent, so Cate Blanchett dubbed her after Kubrick's death, at the suggestion of Cruise and Kidman.
- To keep the R rating it owed Warner Bros. contractually, the studio digitally dropped extra figures into the orgy scene to block the view for American cinemas. Cinematographer Larry Smith said the MPAA became obsessed with the nudity.
- Jocelyn Pook's orgy track "Migrations" carried a recitation from the Bhagavad Gita sung by Carnatic singer Manickam Yogeswaran. The South African Hindu Mahasabha protested, Warner Bros. apologized publicly and paid the singer to record a replacement.
