Plot summary
Leaving a post at a prestigious university, the psychiatrist Zach Riley joins Millwood, the private mental institution run by Dr. Reed, hoping for insight into his father's life. He keeps one thing back at his appointment: his father, the novelist T.L. Pierson, spent years at Millwood battling chronic depression. Pierson later wrote Neverwas, a children's classic in which a child enters a hidden world to set a captive king free. At Millwood, Riley is assigned Gabriel Finch, a patient with schizophrenia who calls himself that captive king. Riley also renews his acquaintance with Maggie Paige, a friend from his childhood.
