Plot summary
In Tucson in 1987, Romy White and Michele Weinberger are tormented at high school by a clique of popular girls led by cheerleader Christy Masters, and Romy is taken with Christy's boyfriend, the athlete Billy Christianson. Heather Mooney, another classmate, loves the geek Sandy Frink, who in turn likes Michele. Ten years on, Romy and Michele are roommates in Los Angeles; Romy is a cashier at a Jaguar dealership and Michele has no job. They are single and spend their evenings dancing at nightclubs. Heather, now a successful businesswoman, comes to the dealership and tells Romy about the ten-year reunion. Neither has much to show for the decade since graduation, so they borrow a co-worker's Jaguar and business suits and decide to claim they invented the Post-it note.

- $240,000 of the film's $20 million budget was spent on securing the licensing rights for a single song, "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper.
- Australian actress Toni Collette was a strong contender for the role of Romy and met with director David Mirkin, but the studio offered the role to Mira Sorvino, who at that point was about to win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Mighty Aphrodite.
- The film includes product placement for the fictional brands Big Kahuna Burger and Red Apple cigarettes, both of which originated in Quentin Tarantino's films.
- Touchstone initially found David Mirkin's final cut of the film to be too quirky and wanted to sweeten the tone, but Mirkin insisted on keeping the edgier tone.
- Because of copyright issues, several songs heard in the film never appeared on either soundtrack album, among them the opening song "Just a Girl" by No Doubt, "Y.M.C.A." by Village People and "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper.
- Schiff based the characters' friendship partly on her relationship with her best friend, remembering a day the two were stuck on a plane on a tarmac and started reading the Sky Mall catalog and laughing: the kind of friend you want to hang out with.
