Plot summary
Philip Marlowe works as a private detective in Los Angeles in 1939. Clare Cavendish, a wealthy heiress, hires him to trace Nico Peterson, who works as a prop master at Pacific Film Studios. Marlowe learns that Peterson was run down by a car outside the Corbata Club, yet Cavendish maintains she has seen him in Tijuana since, and she keeps the rest to herself. She is the daughter of Dorothy Quincannon, a former film star. At Peterson's grave Marlowe notices a woman who hurries away. His friend Joe Green, a homicide detective, will not take on the case, because Floyd Hanson, who owns the Corbata, identified the dead man, and a meeting with Hanson yields nothing.
