Plot summary
Annie Bennett is eleven and has spent her whole life in a New York orphanage during the Great Depression. She keeps half of a heart-shaped locket and a note from her parents that promises they will return. Miss Agatha Hannigan runs the orphanage and works the girls hard while keeping them hungry. One night Annie tries to slip away to find her parents and is caught by Miss Hannigan, but she hides in a laundry bin and gets out. On the streets she befriends a stray dog she calls Sandy, but a police officer catches her and brings her back. At Christmas, billionaire Oliver Warbucks decides to invite an orphan to his home. His secretary, Grace Farrell, chooses Annie, and Annie and Sandy move into the Warbucks mansion.

Audra McDonald recalled that a reshoot of the final scene, which showed her character getting engaged to Daddy Warbucks, was ordered because Disney and ABC were "a little uncomfortable" having a black woman engaged to a white man. Cast and crew were unhappy about the reshoot, and Garber deliberately performed the scene badly so it couldn't make the final cut.- Rob Marshall turned down directing Annie, telling Zadan and Meron that he was a choreographer, not a director, and knew nothing about film. He eventually agreed, but Disney executives objected that Annie was too valuable a property to give to a guy who had never directed a movie.
- For the role of Lily St. Regis, the network wanted Ginger Spice, but director Rob Marshall successfully fought for Kristin Chenoweth, who was then mainly a Broadway name.
- The dancers' costumes and the stage set for the Broadway section of the song "N.Y.C." were taken directly from the "Broadway Melody" ballet in Singin' in the Rain.
- This version dropped four songs from the 1977 stage musical, "We'd Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover", "Tomorrow (Cabinet Reprise)", "Annie" and "New Deal for Christmas", but added a reprise of "N.Y.C." and one of "Little Girls" that come at the end of the film rather than after the songs themselves.
