  1. A role that slipped away

Kilmer had theater commitments already lined up, so he said no to appearing in Francis Ford Coppola's The Outsiders, the 1983 film.

  2. Big break

Kilmer got top billing in the spy movie spoof Top Secret!, his big break, as an American rock and roll star. He sang every song in the film and put out an album under the character name "Nick Rivers".

  3. Getting ready for a role

Before trying out, Kilmer learned all of Morrison's lyrics and mailed Stone a video of himself doing Doors songs. Stone was unimpressed, but Paul A. Rothchild, the Doors' original producer, said he was shaken by it and proposed recording Kilmer in a studio.

  4. Getting ready for a role

Kilmer did not play the piano, but he practiced Chopin's Nocturne in E minor, Op.72, No. 1 for months so he could perform it as Doc Holliday in Tombstone.

  5. Behind the camera

Kilmer wrote a one-man show about Mark Twain called Citizen Twain, and he took the part himself in a Los Angeles production staged in 2012.
