Plot summary
Six people shut inside a hotel steamroom are the leverage a man calling himself James Pettis holds over The Grand Rapids Press. He wants the paper to print his prediction that global warming will bring down civilization, and he says he will raise the temperature if it refuses. Detective Mancini questions him, trying to establish whether the captives are real and where they are being kept. The steamroom group met through an online dating promotion: Grant, a former pro football player, Christopher, a nurse, Catherine, a former actress, Jessie, a waitress, Frank, a restaurateur, and Margaret, a writer. Pettis describes to Mancini what is happening inside the room.
