Plot summary
In 1885 New Mexico Territory, Samuel Jones arrives at his daughter Maggie Gilkeson's ranch hoping to reconcile, but she cannot forgive him for abandoning her and her mother, and sends him away. Renegade Apache Pesh-Chidin, known as El Brujo, and his followers raid the settlements, killing settlers and carrying off women and girls to sell into slavery in Mexico. Maggie's older daughter Lilly is among the captives. With the sheriff unwilling to spare men, Maggie gets her father out of jail, and the two set out after the raiders, taking her younger daughter Dot along. The soldiers they meet at another attacked ranch decline to join the hunt.

- For The Missing, Tommy Lee Jones, Jay Tavare and Simon R. Baker were among the actors who learned to speak some of their dialogue in the Chiricahua dialect of Apache, which runs throughout the film; Tavare noted that only about 300 people are still considered fluent speakers of Chiricahua.
