Plot summary
A rainstorm soaks a small town on Christmas Eve, and the night shift at the police station is quiet. A stranger walks in and tells the desk sergeant he wants to confess to murder. The sergeant draws a handgun and calls for the deputies to cuff him. The man will not give his name, offering Mr. Nobody instead, and he provokes the officers until they are ready to strike. Detective Alexander Black arrives and the stranger announces his business: six murders, each of which he means to describe. The deputies on duty keep him in handcuffs while Black questions him about the murders he claims.
