Plot summary
Hall Baltimore writes novels about witch hunting, and his career is fading. He comes to Swann Valley to promote his latest book, but the town has no bookstore, so he waits in a hardware store for readers who do not come. Sheriff Bobby LaGrange, a fan who wants to write, asks Hall to read his work and takes him to the morgue to see a victim of a serial killer, killed with a stake through the heart. Hall chooses not to look at the face. At a coffee shop Hall learns that a local hotel once sheltered Edgar Allan Poe, and that twelve children were murdered there. He tells his wife, Denise, that he will write about Swann Valley. He sleeps, meets a girl called V and then Poe, and wakes wanting to write a vampire story with Bobby.
