Plot summary
Dusty Crophopper works the cornfields of Propwash Junction, Minnesota, and spends his spare time practicing aerobatic maneuvers. He wants to enter the Wings Around the Globe Rally, a plan his boss Leadbottom and his mechanic friend Dottie dismiss; only his fuel truck friend Chug backs him. Dusty asks Skipper Riley, an elderly navy war plane, to teach him to fly properly, and Skipper turns him down. Dusty qualifies for the race on a legal technicality. In New York City he meets fellow competitors, among them the Mexican racer El Chupacabra and the defending champion Ripslinger, who dismisses him. On the first leg to Iceland, Dusty refuses to fly high, and his fear of heights leaves him in last place.

- Jon Cryer was initially announced as the voice of Dusty before being replaced by Dane Cook; Cryer still received credit on the film for "additional story material".
- Planes was originally set for a direct-to-video release in North America with theaters only in Europe, but in December 2012 Disney announced a theatrical release, the first for a Disneytoon Studios film in North America since Pooh's Heffalump Movie eight and a half years earlier.
- Disney brought a real-life Dusty to the film's premiere at The Fly-In Theater at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, an annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts in Wisconsin: an Air Tractor AT-400A piloted and owned by agriculture pilot Rusty Lindeman.
- The character Rochelle is localised differently around the world: in Australia and New Zealand she is a former Tasmanian mail delivery plane voiced by Jessica Marais, while in Italian she is Azzurra, an Italian prototype plane voiced by Micaela Ramazzotti.
