Plot summary
The Hebrews enslaved in Egypt pray for deliverance, and Pharaoh Seti, fearing rebellion, orders every newborn Hebrew boy drowned. Yocheved carries her baby to the Nile, sets him in a basket on the water and bids him farewell; her daughter Miriam follows the basket until it reaches the palace, where Queen Tuya adopts the child and names him Moses. Moses grows up beside Rameses, Seti's heir. After the brothers damage a temple, Seti scolds them, and when Moses asks that Rameses be trusted with responsibility, Seti names him prince regent. The priests Hotep and Huy present Rameses with Tzipporah, a rebellious Midianite woman; Rameses gives her to Moses and makes him Royal Chief Architect.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The idea was discussed at the formation of DreamWorks Pictures on October 12, 1994, when Katzenberg's partners Steven Spielberg and David Geffen were meeting in Spielberg's living room. Katzenberg recalls that Spielberg looked at him and said, "You ought to do The Ten Commandments".
- It was decided that the voice of God would be provided by Val Kilmer, who portrayed Moses in the film, to indicate that God was communicating with Moses through the voice he would otherwise perceive in his mind, rather than the "larger-than-life tones" used in previous theatrical releases.
- The Prince of Egypt was banned in the Maldives, Malaysia and Egypt, and in all state Islam countries, on the grounds that Islamic prophets are not to be visually depicted.
- Director Brenda Chapman briefly voices Miriam when she sings the lullaby to Moses. The vocals had been recorded for a scratch audio track, intended to be replaced later by Dworsky, but the track turned out so well that it remained in the film.
- Ofra Haza, who voices Yocheved, Moses's biological mother, sang her character's number "Deliver Us" in English and 17 other languages for the film's dubbing.
- The film's Red Sea sequence took a remarkably long time for a single scene: it was animated by twelve people and took three years to complete.
