Plot summary
Phil Lodge is a retired police officer who has recently lost his wife. He moves into a large apartment building in New York City with his two daughters, fourteen-year-old Violet and seven-year-old Rose, and becomes one of three superintendents who live and work in the building. Violet's teacher, her favorite at school, had been killed in that building before the family arrived. Soon after Phil starts the job, people who live in the building begin to disappear one after another. Rose, the younger daughter, is fascinated by Walter, another of the supers, a mysterious man who also dabbles in black magic.
