Plot summary
In New Orleans, a ferry crowded with Navy personnel and their families explodes on the Mississippi during Mardi Gras, killing 543 people. ATF Special Agent Doug Carlin finds evidence of a bomb and examines the body of Claire Kuchever, pulled from the river before the blast, a timing that leads investigators to tie her death to the bombing. FBI Special Agent Paul Pryzwarra, impressed by Doug's deductions, brings him into a government unit led by Dr. Alexander Denny that runs a surveillance program called Snow White, which the team says assembles images of events about four days in the past. Treating Claire as central to the case, Doug watches footage of her days before the explosion and follows a man who phones about the truck she is selling.

- Under pyrotechnics expert John Frazier the ferry was coated entirely in fire retardant and rigged with fifty gasoline bombs; the explosion caused no significant structural damage, and after sandblasting and repainting the ferry was returned to service four days later.
- Rossio says Scott quit the project at one point, and after he and Marsilii reworked the script over two weeks Denzel re-committed and talked Scott into returning; reportedly Denzel made Tony look him in the eye and swear he would not quit again.
- Brian Greene from Columbia University was brought in as a consultant to give the script a scientifically plausible feel, and said "the way I try to explain wormholes in terms of bending paper and connecting the corners, that's there in the film".
- Jim Caviezel's character, Carroll Oerstadt, mirrored the story of Timothy McVeigh, the domestic terrorist who destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City with a bomb in 1995; Caviezel and Scott both admitted the character was at least partly based on him.
- The script was sold for a record $5 million and bought by Jerry Bruckheimer, who got Denzel Washington to star and Tony Scott to direct.
- Screenwriter Rossio complained that Scott had ignored the inclusion of important plot details from the screenplay whenever "there was something he wanted to do" instead.
