Plot summary
Wade Porter is a blue-collar worker who has just raised a loan to grow his company. He lives with Laura, his fiancée, and their son Michael. One night a burglar enters while they sleep; Wade pursues him and hits him with a baseball bat, and the man dies on the lawn. Because he struck an intruder who had already left the house, he is charged with murder. His public defender urges him to plead no contest to involuntary manslaughter for a three-year sentence. On the bus to prison, a passenger is stabbed and a knife is hidden beneath Wade's seat, and the investigation places him in solitary confinement.
