Plot summary
Two ranch hands find Frank Kavanaugh unconscious in the rural New Mexico outskirts, with a gunshot wound to his head, and he is taken to a hospital in the small town of Black Point. Trauma nurse Liz treats him in intensive care, and when he regains consciousness Sheriff Jack Kolb questions him, but the injury has left him with temporary amnesia and he cannot explain what happened. Kolb and his deputies turn up no clues. Kavanaugh, agitated, says he knows of a possible attempt on the president's life; Dr. Theodore Conway calls it a delusional effect of the amnesia. Among his images is a shadowy figure speaking with a mysterious woman named Ms. K. His fiancée, Chloe Richards, arrives, arranges his release, and says they are from Chicago and that he works for the IRS.
