Plot summary
Harry Hole works as an inspector in Oslo, drinks too much, and has lately broken up with Rakel, the mother of a boy named Oleg he loves like a son. A letter arrives bearing a childlike snowman drawing, and Harry joins Katrine Bratt, a new recruit, in looking into the disappearance of Birte Becker, a wife and mother. At Becker's house the two find a snowman. Katrine is hunting a pattern that ties several missing persons cases to an older case from nine years before, worked by the alcoholic inspector Gert Rafto, and she asks Harry to help. In Bergen, Harry meets Rakel's new partner, Mathias, a cosmetic surgeon, and recalls a camping trip he promised Oleg.

- Val Kilmer, who plays Gert Rafto, was suffering from an enlarged tongue during filming after treatment for throat cancer, so many of his scenes were shot with him not visibly speaking, and all of his dialogue was dubbed.
- Jo Nesbø, who wrote the novel that The Snowman is based on, was supposed to make a small cameo in the film, but his scenes were cut.
- The Snowman's poster, which featured a child-like drawing of a snowman and a note to the police, became a popular internet meme shortly after it was released.
