Plot summary
In 1879, Wyatt Earp, once a peace officer with a wide reputation, meets his brothers Virgil and Morgan in Tucson, and together they head for Tombstone to settle down and make their fortune. Wyatt's longtime friend Doc Holliday is there too, hoping the dry air will ease his tuberculosis. Josephine Marcus arrives with a traveling theater troupe, while Wyatt's common-law wife, Mattie Blaylock, has come to rely on laudanum. Curly Bill Brocius leads a gang of outlaws, the Cowboys, who gun down policemen in a Mexican town as retribution for two of their own. The Earps take a share in a saloon and gambling house, and their first clash with the Cowboys follows. Doc and the gang's Johnny Ringo trade words, but others stop them before they can duel.

- Kurt Russell has stated that it was he, and not Cosmatos, who directed the film, and that Cosmatos was brought in as a "ghost director" frontman because Russell did not want it known that he was directing.
- Screenwriter Kevin Jarre was originally hired to direct the film himself but, a month into shooting, producer Andrew Vajna fired him for falling behind schedule and replaced him with George P. Cosmatos.
- Billy Bob Thornton, who played the abusive card dealer thrown out of a saloon by Wyatt, improvised all of his lines after being given only a single instruction: to "be a bully."
- Nearly every mustache worn in the film was real, with only Jon Tenney's, as Sheriff Behan, being fake because he had to stay clean-shaven for a prior job.
- Despite widespread critical praise for Val Kilmer's performance as Doc Holliday, he never received an Oscar nomination for the role.
