Plot summary

Maverick is a Navy captain and test pilot whose defiance of orders has kept him from promotion. After thirty years, he is sent to NAS North Island to train a group of Top Gun graduates for a mission: destroying a uranium enrichment plant in a foreign country before it becomes operational. The target is a bunker buried at the end of a canyon, protected by surface-to-air missiles, jammers and enemy fighters. Maverick devises a plan using F/A-18 Super Hornets and laser-guided bombs, but he is ordered to prepare the pilots rather than fly the mission himself. Among the trainees are the cocky Jake "Hangman" Seresin and Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, the son of Maverick's late friend Goose. Maverick also reunites with Penny Benjamin, a single mother who runs a bar near the base.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • During the pandemic, several streaming companies attempted to purchase the streaming rights to the film from Paramount, but all offers were declined on the orders of Cruise, who insisted that it should be released exclusively in theaters.
  • After treatment and an operation for throat cancer, Val Kilmer worked with Sonantic, a UK voice-synthesis company, to digitally recreate his voice with AI and archived recordings; for Top Gun: Maverick that technology was not used, and director Joseph Kosinski said they used Kilmer's actual voice, digitally altered to increase clarity.
  • The low-pass scene with Ed Harris was filmed at China Lake with a Blue Angels plane flying at less than 50 ft and around 450 knots, and on the 20th and last pass the jet pulled roofing material from the guard shack, which flew off held only by romex cable.
  • To create the illusion that the actors were piloting the jets during flying scenes, the producers paid the Navy $11,374 per flight hour for single-seat F/A-18E and dual-seat F/A-18F Super Hornets, and for the pilots to fly them.
  • The project unexpectedly stalled when Scott died by suicide in August 2012; he had apparently finalized the script and begun scouting locations, touring Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada with Cruise, a week before his death.
  • Glen Powell was initially unimpressed by the role, feeling Hangman was a unidimensional "Navy Draco Malfoy" with no reason to exist beyond adding conflict, until Cruise, Bruckheimer, Kosinski and McQuarrie convinced him he could shape the performance into a more well-rounded character.
  • According to interviews with Vanity Fair and GQ, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton was offered a fighter pilot role because of his friendship with Cruise, but turned down the offer because of his Formula One commitments.
