Plot summary
Earth is in ecological crisis, and for twenty years humans have been sending algae to Mars to make it habitable. When the oxygen there begins to drop, the ship Mars-1 heads out to investigate, with Kate Bowman in command. Her crew is Ted Santen as co-pilot, the science officer Bud Chantilas, engineer Robby Gallagher, and two civilians, Quinn Burchenal and Chip Pettengill. Gallagher is not her first pick, and the others call him the space janitor. On arrival the ship is struck by a gamma-ray burst from a large solar flare. Bowman gets the crew away to the surface and brings the ship's power back so she can reach Houston. The landing craft sets down far from the intended site, and the robot navigator AMEE is thrown clear.

- Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore had been friends, but fell out after Kilmer reportedly became enraged that production had paid for Sizemore's elliptical exercise machine to be shipped to the set. Kilmer shouted that he was making ten million on the film and Sizemore only two, and Sizemore responded by throwing a 50 lb weight at him.
- Kilmer and Sizemore soon refused to speak or to come onto the set if the other was present, so body doubles were used for scenes involving both. A producer is said to have asked Sizemore not to hit Kilmer in the face in the big fight, so he punched him in the chest, hard enough to knock him down.
