Plot summary
E.F. Bloodworth left his wife and sons behind for forty years of roaming, playing music on the road, and now he returns to a forgotten corner of Tennessee. The woman he walked out on, Julia, has withered and faded. Warren drinks and chases women, Boyd is driven by jealousy, and Brady places hexes on his enemies from his mother's porch. The three brothers are soured by anger toward their father and each other. The old man's only solace is Fleming, the grandson he never knew, who shows him the respect his age commands. Fleming meets Raven Lee Halfacre, a beauty from another town.
