Lane Chandler

Biography

Lane Chandler was an American actor who worked mainly in Westerns. Born Robert Clinton Oakes in Culbertson, Montana, he grew up on a horse ranch near there, and that background helped him begin getting bit parts in Paramount westerns from 1925. Studio executives suggested he change his name to Lane Chandler, and he went on to leading roles opposite stars such as Clara Bow, Greta Garbo, Betty Bronson and Esther Ralston. His first lead was in The Legion of the Condemned. He performed well as a silent film star, but the arrival of talkies shifted him into supporting parts. He starred in low-budget westerns in the 1930s, often playing a partner, saddle pal, sheriff or army officer. Later he appeared on many television westerns, including The Lone Ranger, and he continued acting on television and in films through 1966. He died in 1972.
