Eadie Chapman waits tables and partners dances at a beer joint in Kansas City that her abusive stepfather owns. She leaves for New York with Kitty, her man-hungry friend, and tells her on the train that she has ideals: she intends to marry a somebody, and a millionaire seems the right sort of somebody to her. Chorus work takes her to a stag party at the home of Frank Cousins, where she gets a moment alone with him. He offers her costly presents, a pair of star ruby cufflinks among them, but she will not take them unless the two of them become engaged. He agrees straight away.
