Ray Teal
Biography
Ray Teal was an American actor whose career in film and television lasted from 1937 to 1970, with more than 300 appearances. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, he worked as a saxophonist and bandleader before turning to acting. In the 1930s he led an orchestra called the Floridians. On screen he became a familiar figure in westerns, often playing lawmen. His most famous part was Sheriff Roy Coffee in the series Bonanza, a role he held from 1959 to 1972 over 98 episodes. His film work included The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), Ace in the Hole (1951), The Men (1950), The Wild One (1953), One-Eyed Jacks (1961), and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). He also made many guest appearances in television westerns such as Cheyenne, The Lone Ranger, and Wagon Train. Ray Teal died in 1976.

Ray Teal played saxophone and led a band to pay for his studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, before he turned to acting.
Beyond film
In the early 1930s Teal led an orchestra called the Floridians, which played to full houses in Atlanta, Chattanooga and Nashville. The group spent 17 weeks at the Olympia Theater in Miami.
Beyond film
Teal served as master of ceremonies at New York's Paramount Theatre. By the mid-1930s, his show had grown to feature a "Music Hall Varieties" segment with comedian Ben Blue.
