Plot summary
Ben Thompson's gang is selling rifles to the Apaches, and three of its riders ambush two marshals in town, killing one of them. The surviving marshal, Clay Hardin, gives up the post of Indian commissioner he was about to take and his fiancée to go after the gang. On the trail he frees Bentley, one of Thompson's men, and Abby, a former saloon worker headed for a new start in California. Reb Carleton, a bounty hunter Hardin knows, joins them after Clay drives off an Apache war party, and Thompson learns that Hardin is on his trail.

- While making Shotgun, Yvonne De Carlo, who played Abby, met stunt man Bob Morgan, who became her husband; in her memoirs she also wrote that she had a crush on her co-star Sterling Hayden.
- Shotgun was based on a story by actor Rory Calhoun, and producer John Champion tried to cast Calhoun in the film, but Universal Pictures would not lend him out.
