Plot summary
Two American-born pilots, Jerry Young and Mike Richards, join Britain's Royal Flying Corps during World War I. Both are assigned to the dangerous work of reconnaissance over enemy lines. In the fighting, the gunners and observers who fly with Jerry are lost one after another, until only Henry Crocker, another pilot in the squadron, is available to fly beside him. The two men had met and fought each other before. Jerry's dislike of Crocker grows when Crocker shoots a German observer who has bailed out of a blimp by parachute. Major Dunham commands the squadron, and he counts Jerry as his best pilot.

- Most of the aerial combat in The Eagle and the Hawk was not shot for it: the film used clips from Paramount's Wings (1927) and Young Eagles (1930) and Warner Brothers' The Dawn Patrol (1930).
- Gary Cooper was set to play the role Cary Grant plays in The Eagle and the Hawk, and shooting was delayed so Cooper could finish another film; George Raft was also considered for Fredric March's part.
- Mitchell Leisen got co-director credit only for the 1939 re-release of The Eagle and the Hawk. He claimed he did most of the directing while Stuart Walker acted as assistant, but Walker's Paramount contract guaranteed him full director credit.
- For its 1939 re-release, some scenes in the World War I drama The Eagle and the Hawk were cut to comply with the Production Code.
