Plot summary
Melody Jones rides into a town with his friend George Fury, and the people there take him for Monte Jarrad, a bandit wanted by the law. The mistake brings Melody no end of trouble, and he decides the best thing is to leave town. Then he meets Cherry de Longpre, the girl of the bandit he is taken for. The real Jarrad is hiding in her home. Cherry first keeps the newcomer near to draw the townsfolk's attention away from the man she is sheltering. Melody is an easygoing man who cannot shoot straight and sings silly songs while riding his horse.

- Gary Cooper had the Western town of Payneville built for the film at the Iverson Movie Ranch in Chatsworth, California. The set went on to be used in many other productions over the next 20 years.
- Gary Cooper sings "I'm a Poor Lonesome Cowboy" in Along Came Jones. The song later became the signature tune of Lucky Luke in the comics series by René Goscinny and Morris.
- Along Came Jones was the only film in which Gary Cooper both acted and produced. He made it as an independent producer, the first time he had done so.
- The film's ironic title probably inspired the Coasters' 1959 song "Along Came Jones", written by Leiber and Stoller. Songwriter Mike Stoller had studied orchestration under Arthur Lange, the composer of the film's score.
