Plot summary

Cholera kills the family that raised Chad in Kentucky in the years before the Civil War. A neighbor, Nathan Dillon, says the family owed him money and demands that Chad work off the debt as his indentured servant. Chad refuses, and Dillon and his son set upon him, until a passing neighbor, Caleb Turner, steps in and helps him. Caleb invites Chad to live and work at the Turner farm to pay for his keep, and Chad agrees, planning to move on to Lexington once the logging season ends. There Major Buford, a widowed landowner with no children, meets Chad at an auction of thoroughbred horses and takes a liking to him.
