Richard Arlen

Biography

Richard Arlen was an American actor who worked in films and television, starting in silent pictures after serving as a Royal Flying Corps pilot during World War I. He was born in Saint Paul and later did flight instruction for the Army Air Forces in World War II. After attending the University of Pennsylvania and taking assorted jobs, he got into movies as an extra. His best-known role was a pilot in Wings (1927), an Academy Award-winning film. He later acted in Island of Lost Souls (1932), a science fiction horror picture adapted from H.G. Wells. Universal paired him with Andy Devine in 1939 for fourteen action-comedy B-pictures called the Aces of Action series. During the 1950s and early 1960s he was a frequent television guest, appearing in westerns, anthology shows and dramas, and in 1960 he was honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for his film contributions.
