Plot summary
In February 1942 a road construction gang in Northern California is called to a meeting. Pop Ormsby, the crew's boss, has been commissioned a major in the Army Corps of Engineers. He signs up the whole outfit, his two sons Woody and Steve among them, as Technical Sergeants on the Alcan Highway, the road that will connect Alaska and Canada. Woody would rather enlist in the Marines and fight the Japanese. Ann is the daughter of the road engineer Blair Caswell, one of the men in charge of the work, and meeting her gives Woody reason to stay; the brothers become rivals for her as the highway is built.
