Yvonne De Carlo

Biography

Born in Vancouver, Yvonne De Carlo was an actress, dancer and singer who rose to Hollywood stardom in the 1940s and 1950s. She started as a nightclub dancer, signed with Paramount Pictures in 1942, and took uncredited bit parts before her first lead in Deerslayer. Her breakthrough came with Salome, Where She Danced (1945) at Universal, leading to a five-year contract and Technicolor productions. Cameramen named her Queen of Technicolor for three consecutive years. She appeared in Brute Force (1947) and Criss Cross (1949), then in Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments (1956) as Sephora, a role that won her a Laurel Award. Later credits included Death of a Scoundrel (1956), Band of Angels (1957) and Munster, Go Home! (1966), after starring as Lily Munster in The Munsters. On Broadway, she played Carlotta Campion in Stephen Sondheim's Follies. Her autobiography Yvonne was published in 1987, and she received two Hollywood Walk of Fame stars. She died in 2007.
