John Ireland

Biography

John Ireland was a Canadian-born actor who also directed films, and he began his career on the stage, making his Broadway debut in a 1941 production of Macbeth before signing with 20th Century Fox. He was born in Vancouver and grew up in New York City. Audiences came to know him for supporting roles in Westerns such as My Darling Clementine (1946), Red River (1948), Vengeance Valley (1951), and Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957). Playing the reporter Jack Burden in All the King's Men (1949) brought him a nomination for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. His other pictures included Spartacus (1960), 55 Days at Peking (1963), The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), and Farewell, My Lovely (1975). He also played the lead in the British television series The Cheaters and worked in Italian cinema, including One on Top of the Other (1969). He directed movies as well and received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960.
