Plot summary
Once the Civil War is over, Johnny Hawks comes back to the West, where he earned his name fighting Indians. His job is to bring a wagon train safely to Oregon through the country of Chief Red Cloud's Lakota people. Tribesmen trade gold to white men for whiskey, and two traders, Wes Todd and Chivington, want to know where the yellow iron is found; they kill a member of the tribe who will not tell them, and Chivington gets away while Todd is seized. Hawks rides to Red Cloud's camp, defeats the chief's brother Gray Wolf in a fight for the prisoner's life, and takes Todd to the fort of Captain Trask, inviting Red Cloud to come and sign a peace treaty. Onahti, the chief's daughter, has grown into a woman, and Hawks loves her.
