Plot summary
Scientists studying the barometric readings conclude that something is deeply wrong and that an unprecedented event is near, and they begin to warn New York City. An eclipse of the sun follows, and messages arriving from Rome and London describe days of unending earthquakes. Then tremendous earthquakes strike the West Coast of the United States, and the shocks set off tsunamis across the oceans. Martin Webster and his wife Helen gather their children, Ronny and Mary Ann, along with food and clothing, and set out for a high rock formation where they hope to escape the floods. Martin heads back toward the house for more supplies.

- S. Fowler Wright, whose 1928 novel Deluge was based on, watched the final scenes being shot and was angered that the producers had changed his book's ending. He called the film "ghastly" in his diary and advised his children not to see it.
- Deluge was considered a lost film for many years until Forrest J Ackerman discovered a print, dubbed into Italian as La distruzione del mondo, in a film archive in Italy in 1981.
- Deluge was the first film to visualize the total destruction of New York City, even though it was filmed entirely in Los Angeles.
- The tidal wave scene, which leaves New York submerged in water with nearly all its inhabitants drowned, was later recreated in the 2004 disaster film The Day After Tomorrow.
- Republic Pictures bought Deluge for just its special effects footage, reusing the scenes of destruction in S.O.S. Tidal Wave (1939), Dick Tracy vs Crime Inc (1941) and King of the Rocket Men (1949).
- Part of the film's stock footage of ships and planes returning to port under storm warnings is actual footage of a large United States Navy rigid airship, which was lost at sea in 1935.
