Plot summary
Owen Pentecost, from North Carolina, goes to the Colorado Territory on a whim and reaches Denver. There he meets Ann Merry Alaine, who intends to run a dress shop in the town. In a hotel saloon, Owen wins a poker game against Jumbo Means, who had staked his property on the last hand, and the hotel comes with Boston Grant, who works in it. Ann Merry and Boston each warm to Owen. Denver is largely Unionist, and its people want the gold held by the town's Confederate minority. Owen is a Southerner, one of that minority, and the approach of the Civil War divides the town.
