Biography

Jean Rogers was an American performer who became a leading lady in 1930s serials and in modest features the following decade. Born Eleanor Dorothy Lovegren in Belmont, Massachusetts, she won a 1933 beauty contest backed by Paramount Pictures that opened her way into Hollywood. Universal Pictures signed her in 1935, and she took the ingenue part of Dale Arden opposite Buster Crabbe in the company's first two Flash Gordon serials, among them Flash Gordon (1936). Eager for feature work, she accepted leads in small Universal productions such as Night Key (1937). At 20th Century-Fox from 1938 she appeared in that studio's low-budget series pictures, including Charlie Chan in Panama (1940), and had a supporting role in Brigham Young (1940). Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer signed her in 1941, though her assignments there stayed minor. She freelanced afterward, and her last screen appearance was a supporting part in The Second Woman (1950).

In 1933, Rogers entered and won a beauty contest that Paramount Pictures sponsored. That victory opened the door to her career in Hollywood, though she had hoped to study art.
A role that slipped away
Rogers told writer Richard Lamparski that she did not want to appear in the second Flash Gordon serial and requested that her studio let her skip the third.
